A BIT MORE ON COURTESY FLAGS

Having read my page on Flags and Ensigns I have no doubt  you are all doing much better with your ‘pavillonerie’.

Here is another one for you all:   Observed hoisted on a yacht alongside in Dunkirk.  Sadly the yacht was also wearing a Red Ensign, so everyone could see the nationality of the person displaying.

A number of things are wrong with this hoist,  but at least it was on the starboard, (signalling) hoist, the correct position for a courtesy flag

(Just for interest, to say  ‘a courtesy flag‘  in French?   un pavillon d’acceuille)

OK,  how many mistakes has this skipper made with this hoist?  CLICK HERE  to send me your answers.  I will post mine at the end of July.

Mistakes on the hoist.

  1. 1. More than one country’s flag.  Rules state no flag is to fly higher than the country’s flag, so I guess this skipper was hedging his bets.

  2. 2.Brittany flag being flown in Nord pas de Calais

  3. 3.Netherlands Flag upside down

  4. 4.Flags not hoisted fully (close up)

  5. 5.Hoist slack.

  6. 6.Apart from that, it all looks peachy.
